Design inspiration
This cardigan was born in the mist of my sleep deprived days with my firstborn. I basically hadn’t slept for 8 months and was just too tired to do anything but still need something to do. When I at some points had a few minutes over to relax I wanted a project that was easy and didn’t require a lot of counting. The Oatfield Cardigan was slowly born. I did only manage to make half of it, then I decided to take on another a bit bigger project - namely the project of making my own crochet book. So this cardigan was left in the WIP pile for 8 months before it was finally time for it to see light again.

This cardigan is made using the herringbone double crochet stitch. I remember seeing this at some point thinking that one day I’ll design in it. I love the tallness of the stitch combined with the still somehow thickness of it. It created a light and airy garment with beautiful texture.

This cardigan is made using Tweed Delight from Hobbii yarns. They sponsored the yarn a few years back for my Confetti Dreams Cardigan and I got two different colors at that point to see which one would go best for that. Now I used the other color for this project. The yarn is a Aran/Worsted (4) weight yarn with a bit of roughness. The strand in itself is fun cause sometimes it is really thick and sometimes thinner, making the yarn give the garment a rougher look. That is perfect when the stitch and design would otherwise create a simple look.

Materials

  • Recommended Yarn: Tweed Delight from Hobbii Yarn (85% Wool, 10% Acrylic, 5% Viscose), 109 yds (100 m) per 50-g skein or other Aran / Worsted / 10 ply / 9 wpi / 4-weight yarn as long as you meet gauge.

  • Yarn usage: 9 (10, 11, 12, 13) (14, 15, 17, 18) skeins of Tweed Delight. Sample made in color 20 - Chai latte.

  • Crochet hook size: US H-8 (5 mm)

  •  Tapestry needle to sew and weave ends

  • Stitch markers or similar

  • Measuring Tape

  • Scissors

  • 4 buttons (optional)

  • Sewing thread to attach the buttons (if buttons)

About

The Oatfield Cardigan is worked in one body piece and two sleeves. All worked flat in rows. These are then seamed together to make the cardigan and a neckline is added to the body.

The cardigan in the pictures is a sample made in size S (no ease on the model, but suggested ease is 4”/10cm).

Sizes

Note! The measurements below are the measurements of the final garment size (after blocking).

Size modifications

Length of the cardigan: Make more or less rows when working the body before the shoulders.

Sleeves: The length you easily adjust by making more or less rows. Try it on to see what you prefer! The width you can adjust by making either another size sleeve than body (i.e. L sleeves for and M sweater) . You also need to leave that  amount of stitches unworked when sewing the sides together. Eg. if you want L size sleeve to the M size sweater mark the stitches accordingly (see section about sewing instructions.)
