A few months back I got an email with an invitation to teach at the Crochet Summit organised by Rebecca Page. After giving it some thought I decided I wanted to share a triangle shawl / wrap pattern with you! With combination of color and texture in interesting ways this shawl pattern keeps it interesting row after row.

Materials

Yarn: Sugar Baby Alpaca from Wool and the Gang or other DK / 8 ply / 11 wpi / 3-weight yarn.
Yarn usage: 700 m / 765 y wrap in picture uses 3 colors.
- Color 1: 4 skeins (480 m/508 y) in Rocky Grey or Sand Trooper Beige
- Color 2: 1 skein (116 m /127 yards) in Cameo Rose or Quetzal Green
- Color 3: 1 skein (116 m /127 yards) in Brown Sugar
Crochet hook size: 4.0 mm / G-6
Darning needle to weave in ends

About

The triangle scarf is worked from the centre out beginning with a magic circle. It can be made using any fibre of choice to match the current season. The wrap in the picture is made using alpaca but it would also work great in wool or cotton.

Gauge is not as important as for a garment. You can easily make it larger by adding more rows and smaller by skipping rows.

Chains do not count as stitches, except for Ch 2 in the beginning of the row which counts as 1 hdc.

Only change color when implied to do so. Most of the rows uses color 1 and if not mentioned, assume it is color 1 to use.

Stitches

V-stitch (V-st)

Is made in the ch 1 space from previous row. 1 hdc, ch 1, hdc in the same stitch as first hdc (2sts).

Alternating color 1 (c1) and color 2 (c2)

When alternating c1 and c2 you begin the stitch with one of the colors and before you pull through the 3 loops on the hook in the end of the hdc you do that with the second color.

Make sure that the color not currently in use lies in the middle of you stitch so that you crochet around it and carry it with you inside the row.

Use color 1. Begin by making a magic circle.
Row 1: Ch 2. Work 2 hdc in the circle, ch 1 (this is the ch 1 space), 3 hdc in the circle. Pull the end to close the circle. Turn. (6 sts)

Row 2: Ch 2. 2 hdc in first st, 2 hdc, V-st, 2 hdc, 3 hdc in last st. Turn. (12 sts)

Row 3: Ch 2. 2 hdc in first st, 5 hdc, V-st, 5 hdc, 3 hdc in last st. Turn. (18 sts)

Row 4: Ch 2. 2 hdc in first st, 8 hdc, V-st, 8 hdc, 3 hdc in last st. Turn. (24 sts)

Row 5: c1/c2 alternating row. Hold color 2 together with color 1. With color 1, ch 2. 2 hdc in first st, pull through with color 2 on the last hdc. 1 hdc in color 2, pulling through with color 1. Alternate c1 and c2 for a total of 11 hdc, V-st in color 1 (pulling through with c2 on final hdc), alternate c2 and c1 for 11 hdc, with c1: 3 hdc in last st. Turn. (30 sts)

Row 6: Ch 2. In the first front loop: 2 hdc, continuing in the first front loop 14 hdc, V-st, in the first front loop 14 hdc, 3 hdc in the first front loop of last st. Turn. (36 sts)

Row 7: c1/c2 alternating row. Hold color 2 together with color 1. With color 1, ch 2. 2 hdc in first st, pull through with color 2 on the last hdc. 1 hdc in color 2, pulling through with color 1. Alternate c1 and c2 for a total of 17 hdc, V-st in color 1 (pulling through with c2 on final hdc), alternate c2 and c1 for 17 hdc, with c1: 3 hdc in last st. Turn. (42 sts)

Row 10: With color 3: ch 3, 2 dc in the first st, sk 3 sts, *4 dc, ch 1, sk 3 sts* repeat *-* 5 times, 3 dc, V-st (with dc instead of hdc), 3 dc, ch 1, sk 3, *4 dc, ch 1, sk 3 sts* repeat *-* 4 times, 4 dc, sk 3 sts, 3 dc in last st. Turn. (64 sts) Cut off color 3.

Row 11: With color 1: ch 2, in the back loop, 2 hdc in the first st, 29 hdc in the back loop including around every 2nd chain from row 10 (Please note! you only go around every second chain, that means skipping every second), V - st, 29 hdc in the back loop including around every 2nd chain from row 10, 3 hdc in the back loop of last st. (66 sts)

Row 12 - 51: Repeat row 4-11. With a few exception on how to make row 10 (see row 19, 27, 35, 43, 51). All rows are written out in the following text.

Row 13: c1/c2. Hold color 2 together with color 1. With color 1, ch 2. 2 hdc in first st, pull through with color 2 on the last hdc. 1 hdc in color 2, pulling through with color 1.
